Money20/20 Europe 2026 brought open banking, consolidation and tokenisation firmly into focus for Pierre Berger, Partner at DLA Piper UK LLP.
He looks at how the next phase of open banking could extend competition beyond payments into areas such as insurance, investment and finance, while giving banks, fintechs and other providers new ways to build products around customer data.
Pierre also covers the growing appetite for M&A and joint ventures as financial firms look for scale and combine established banking capabilities with newer technology.
On tokenisation, he sets out some of the regulatory issues still to be resolved, including how tokens are classified, who legally owns them, how custody and insolvency protections work, and the difficulty of taking tokenised products across markets with very different regulatory regimes.
